Big Crowds Gather for the Latest Version of the iPad

On Friday, Apple started selling the third version of its tablet computer, which comes outfitted with a faster processor and a so-called Retina display screen, which is four times sharper than its predecessor.

The device debuted as the day began across the globe, first in Tokyo and Australia, and a few other countries, before arriving in the United States at 8 a.m Eastern. Several news outlets have been reporting that throngs of people eager to be among the first to own the new tablet are lining up around the world. Among them was Steve Wozniak, Apple’s co-founder, who announced on Twitter that he planned to queue up in Los Angeles to buy his device.
“Starting a line for the new iPad tomorrow,” he wrote on Twitter late last night.

The new iPad, which starts at $499, boasts an avalanche of pixels and a version compatible with LTE, or the fourth-generation wireless network known as long-term evolution.

The crowds, however, seem to be more muted than they were last year for the release of the iPad 2. The reason is mainly because there was no pre-order available for the iPad 2, forcing shoppers to line up at Apple’s retail stores, said Gene Munster, an analyst with Piper Jaffray.
“We observed 750 people in line at 8 a.m.,” wrote Mr. Munster in a note. “This compares to 1,190 last year at the time of the iPad 2 sale.”
Even so, Mr. Munster said he expected Apple to report that it sold more than a million devices over the weekend.

Is the FBI breaching the Constitution in the name of national security?

A report in Wired has exposed the shady way in which the FBI is using National Security Letters (NSL) and 2001's Patriot Act to spy on American citizens, potentially breaching their constitutional rights to privacy in the process. An unnamed communications provider is currently fighting an NSL demanding information on one of its users, who the FBI claims represents a threat to national security. The letter, which has been published with sensitive information redacted, instructs the company to tell nobody — especially not the target of the investigation — of its existence.

NSLs are not a new concept, having first been introduced in the 1980s. The introduction of the Patriot Act allowed them to be used far more aggressively, though, with the US Department of Justice recording a peak of 49,425 uses of the letters in 2006. By means of an NSL, the FBI is able to demand information on a user without a warrant, and place a gagging order on the company that prevents it discussing the case. Judges have previously expressed concern that the gag orders could also limit judicial review of the system, and force the courts to assume that the NSLs are necessary.

The American Civil Liberties Union has long expressed concern over the use of NSLs, frequently filing freedom of information requests in order to uncover more details over their use. With the question marks over their constitutional legality never settled, the gagging orders are occasionally beaten in court — famously in the case of Nicholas Merrill, a former owner of a small ISP who successfully quashed the order after a six-year-long fight.

Video Site DramaFever Raises $4.5M, With Backing From YouTube Co-Founder

DramaFever wants to build a site where North American audiences can watch TV from around the world, and it has won the support of some key figures from YouTube’s past.
The company just announced that it has raised $4.5 million in Series B funding. The round was led by MK Capital, a firm whose portfolio also includes Movieclips and popular gaming video site Machinima. YouTube’s co-founder Steve Chen and Benjamin Ling (a product manager at Google who was YouTube’s director of partnerships, content, and platforms from 2008 to 2010) also invested, as did Stubhub founder Jeff Fluhr, GraphEffect president Stephano Kim, Wikets CEO Andy Park, and Capital IQ co-founders Randy Winn and Steve Turner.
Co-founder Seung Bak says he became convinced there might be a business here when he saw the online fan communities that built up around Asian TV shows, even though they weren’t even available legally in the United States. So he made a few licensing deals (DramaFever programs are subtitled in English and can be streamed in the United States and Canada) and launched a “very simple” version of the site in August 2009. Now DramaFever has the rights to more than 400 titles from 60 media companies in seven countries.
Viewers can watch the shows with ads, or pay a $10-per-month subscription fee to get rid of them. DramaFever claims to have 1.5 million monthly visitors who watch the free shows, as well as 15,000 subscribers. Right now, the programming comes from Asian countries. Bak says that for some viewers, it replaces the stack of VHS tapes purchased at an Asian supermarket. (As the child of Chinese parents, I can definitely relate to this.) At the same time, he says the shows aren’t just of interest to Asian Americans — in fact, 75 percent of DramaFever’s visitors are not of Asian descent.
DramaFever has operated at or near break-even levels for most of its history. With this funding, Bak says the company can get a little more aggressive. One goal is to expand the programming beyond Asia, to include Latin American telenovelas, Bollywood movies, and more. Another is to get DramaFever on more mobile and connected TV platforms (it’s currently available on Roku, and there’s a version of the site that’s optimized for iPad).
Bak positions DramaFever as part of the second wave of online video, which goes beyond the user-generated content of sites like YouTube and is more focused on bringing things like Hollywood movies and prime-time TV to the Web. Of course, that second wave has had its challenges, with sites like Netflix and Hulu struggling with rising licensing fees. Bak admits that DramaFever can’t escape those problems — “Content is definitely getting more expensive” — but it should have an easier time, since it’s opening up entirely new revenue streams for its partners, rather than competing for the same audience.

Air-style MacBook Pro in production tip insiders

Apple’s refreshed MacBook Pro range is currently in production, with new 13- and 15-inch models ditching the DVD drive to deliver MacBook Air style but more performance grunt, according to insiders. The first batch of the new Pros is headed to Apple this month, industry rumor-mongers DigiTimes‘ sources in the supply chain claim, and are believed to use Intel Ivy Bridge processors along with offering more storage than the Air.Initial shipments are expected to be in the region of 100,000-150,000 units, though that’s predicted to rise to 900,000 units per month, according to the leaks.
 
A thinner MacBook Pro has been rumored for some time, with Apple widely expected to continue its scything away at physical media and ditch the SuperDrive burner in a bid to save space, battery power and push greater adoption of digital distribution platforms like the Mac App Store and iTunes.
 
However, there is also a companion rumor of a 15-inch MacBook Air, also believed to use Ivy Bridge processors. It’s tipped to have similar specifications otherwise to the current models, such as not having a dedicated ethernet port, and it’s unclear whether Apple is indeed working on two slimline 15-inch models or if the speculation has all become conflated along the way.
 
As for the 17-inch MacBook Pro, that’s said to remain the outlier in the Pro range, with an optical drive and thicker profile so as to keep the power users happy.

Kansas Governor Deletes 'Scrcasm Bombing' from Facebook Wall

After receiving a flood of sarcastic Facebook messages — a seemingly coordinated action that one site described as a “sarcasm bombing” — Kansas Governor Sam Brownback decided to clear the comments from his wall Thursday.

The posts have been flooding Brownback’s page for the past couple of days in response to an anti-abortion bill introduced into the Kansas legislature. Brownback said he has not read the 69-page bill, but has said he would sign it.

It’s not clear if the surge of comments on his Facebook page was simply a result of the controversial legislation making headlines, or if it was an organized campaign. The defining characteristic of the comments: they all treat Brownback as if he were an expert on women’s health issues.
Here are some of the less lurid comments from Brownback’s Facebook wall:
  • “Hi Sam- I had sex with my wife and she didn’t get pregnant. I’m here to turn her in.”
  • “I just called your office, and they wouldn’t let me schedule a pap smear. I’m confused, aren’t you taking care of all this now?”
  • “Hey Governor Brownback, I was considering going on birth control because I’m fed up with being a teacher who has acne. Which one would you recommend for this?”
  • “UPDATE: My wife changed her pad. You may resume regular activities. Thanks again for caring so much, Sam.”
Mashable called Brownback’s office and spoke to someone who said they couldn’t comment. We left a voicemail and email message for Brownback’s media spokespeople and are waiting for a response.
Brownback is no stranger to being criticized on social media. Late last year, he apologized to an 18-year-old after her disapproving tweet about him landed her in hot water with school officials.

The student, Emma Sullivan, was on a field trip when she met Brownback and tweeted some unflattering remarks. Brownback’s staff contacted the girl’s school; Sullivan was lectured by the principal for an hour and asked to write an apology letter. She refused, and the governor later apologized on behalf of his staff for the incident.

Dutch site Focus Media has obtained a pre-production version of Samsung's upcoming mirrorless camera, the NX20. Looking like a slightly larger version of the current NX11, its odd shell holds a full 20.3-megapixel APS-C size CMOS sensor and a built-in flash. While this is only a pre-production model, it seems likely that the look and specifications will remain largely the same. On this model at least, Samsung has given the NX20 a considerable spec boost over the NX11: max ISO has been increased from 3200 to 12,800, max continuous frame rate has bumped from 3fps to 8fps, and minimum shutter speed moves from 1/4000 to 1/6000 of a second. The NX20 also has a 3-inch AMOLED screen, an electronic viewfinder, and built-in Wi-Fi. There're no pricing or release date yet, but we'll update you as and when Samsung makes the NX20 official.

Neo Geo X portable console is real, out this spring from Blaze

It's now confirmed that the device is indeed real and set for a launch in Q2 2012. The Neo Geo X is licensed by SNK and manufactured by Blaze, a company that has made similar all-in-one portables for systems like the Sega Genesis and Master System. The specs and preloaded games are in line with what we heard before, though it has a 3.5-inch screen rather than the 4.3 inches previously reported.

There's no word yet on price — rumors were floating around that it'd cost £500, a figure that sounded both completely unbelievable and scarily possible given the notoriously expensive hardware it's based on, but those have been firmly debunked by Blaze. The company says it's planning to bring the Neo Geo experience to people "in a more affordable manner," so we'd expect the device to be reasonably priced. It will, however, be produced in limited quantities, so for now it might be worth registering your interest at the Neo Geo X site.

Intel Capital Invests $21 Million In Swedish Eye-Tracking Tech Company Tobii

Intel is betting big on the future of human interfaces with a $21 million (143 million kronor) investment in Tobii, a Swedish company that has been working for years on eye-tracking laptops and other devices. A 10% stake, it implies a valuation of around $200 million for the 12-year-old company. In 2007 Tobii raised $14M, then in 2009 another $26.8M, and the $21M from Intel Capital continues that trend of steady R&D funding.

The news, announced by co-founder and VP John Elvesjö and reported by Computer Sweden, comes on the heels of Tobii’s newest eye-tracking device, which was announced a week ago at CeBit. The timing probably isn’t a coincidence.

Elvesjö noted that their plan was always to test at small scale in laptops and then expand into larger markets: cars, for instance, or perhaps mobile phones.

Intel is a leader in desktop computing and servers, but it has been taken by surprise in recent years by rival ARM, which now dominates the embedded and mobile space. Eye-tracking is a potentially influential feature that could grow in value especially in the personal and ubiquitous device areas, and Intel probably hopes to secure a functional advantage by integrating next-generation interface technologies. Tobii technology has already been demonstrated controlling Windows 8 via eye-tracking, and Intel is certainly highly invested in the future of that OS.

Tobii is not yet profitable, which is to be expected in an R&D-heavy company building out a product on venture investments. 2010 saw a ~$3.5M loss (other earnings haven’t been reported), but if Intel’s valuation is any indication, that kind of spending is perfectly healthy.

The new model of eye-tracker is smaller, cheaper, better, and draws less power than its predecessor. Their products have historically been quite expensive, but they hope that this new, more easily embeddable device will allow the technology to spread downwards towards consumer devices.
